Abstract

456,259. Handling removable vehicle bodies. HINE, C. P., Ash Grove, Rowley Lane, Lepton, near Huddersfield. March 13, 1936, No. 7558. [Classes 78 (iii) and 78 (iv)] [See also Group XXXII] Apparatus for handling removable vehicle bodies or containers A, Figs. 1 and 2, comprises converging wheeled struts or legs H pivoted to the body and provided with mechanism whereby the lower ends of the pair of legs at each side of the body can be moved towards and away from each other to raise and lower the body. The legs H are pivoted on arms C which are pivoted at D on body brackets E and are connected together by links G. The movement of the arms C to the position shown is limited by chains F which can be adjusted to allow the legs H to be splayed outwardly as shown at the right of Fig. 10. The lower ends of the legs at each side of the body are connected together by right-and-left handed screws h<3> adjusted by a turn-buckle h<4>, so that the legs can be drawn towards each other from the position shown, in which the body A is resting on the lorry, sufficiently to raise the body clear of the lorry which can then be removed. Stops g, adjustably clamped on the arms C, engage under the links G and limit the raising movement of the body. The legs H can be drawn together by chain gear and a winch at one end of the body, or levers K, K<1> may be employed as shown in Fig. 7. The short arms of the levers, which are pivoted together at k, are connected by chains k3 and hooks k<4> to the legs H. When the levers are rotated through 180‹ to the position shown in Fig. 8, the hooks k<4> are drawn together and the body is raised. Pins k<2> on the levers engage under the chains and keep the body in the raised position. In the construction shown in Fig. 6 a container J may be used on a lorry to hold a body A and may be used separately to support a load when the lorry is being used for other work.
