Abstract

456,098. Regulating. MULLER, E. L., 215, Kurf³rstendamm, Berlin. Feb. 14, 1936, No. 4542. Convention date, April 17, 1935. [Class 7 (vi)] In engines in which liquid fuel supplied by a pump, together with air, is admitted to the cylinder during the compression stroke, the quantity of fuel delivered by the pump is regulated by hand simultaneously with the regulation of the air supply, and also automatically by the vacuum in the induction pipe so that increasing suction diminishes the fuel supply. A yielding connection is provided in the hand control of the air throttle so that the throttle movement lags behinds the fuel-pump control, causing the mixture to be momentarily enriched during acceleration. Fig. 1 shows the air throttle 5 controlled from the accelerator pedal 1 by linkages 2, 3, 4 with a yielding connection provided by a spring 10, the fuel pump 8 being adjusted through an arm 24 and a rod 7 having a device 15 which contracts lengthwise under the suction of the induction pipe, to which it is connected by a pipe 16. The device 15 comprises an elastic vessel 17 connected to a container 18 through a plug 25 having a narrow orifice, the vessel 17 being filled, and the container 18 partly filled with a non-volatile liquid. A cover 19 of the container is connected to the arm 24 and has a helical extension closely fitting the container, which serves to prevent air from reaching the plug 25 during jolting of the vehicle. The narrow passage in the plug 25 acts as a dash-pot to slow down the action of the vacuum on the elastic vessel 17 in lengthening or shortening the rod 7.
