Abstract

455,806. Magnets. BAERMANN, M., 30, Deutscher Ring, and DYNAMIT AKT.- GES. VORM. A. NOBEL & CO., Troisdorf Bez, both in Cologne, Germany. June 28, 1935, Nos. 18598 and 18599. Convention dates, July 11, 1934 and Aug. 11, 1934. [Class 35] A permanent magnet is made by reducing ferromagnetic material of high coercive force to powder, mixing or soaking it with a binding medium, forming it into a solid by casting, pressing or other hot or cold treatment and finally magnetizing it. A suitable magnetic material is a nickel-aluminium-steel alloy having a coercive force higher than 240 Oerstedt, and as a binding material, natural or artificial resins or a nonmagnetic metal of low melting point may be used. The magnet may be protected by a sleeve of nonmagnetic material. A magnetic field may be applied during the pressing operation. Polepieces of high permeability material may be built into the magnet and secured thereto by extensions of nonmagnetic material projecting into the magnet. The pressing or casting operation, the heating of the mould and the insertion of the polepieces may be effected in a single operation. The mixture may be introduced into a hollow nonmagnetic body bounded by two steel plungers, one of which is fixed and the other movable and magnetized from an external source through the steel plungers or by means of a winding placed either on the hollow body or on a piece of soft iron bridging the plungers. The magnetic material is formed by reducing larger pieces to powder so that grains of all sizes from 0À01 mm. to 1 mm. are present. If the powder is sufficiently fine and high pressure is employed, a separate binding medium may be dispensed with.
