Abstract
455,329. Oil engines. JACKSON, L. MELLERSH-, 28, Southampton Buildings, Chancery Lane, London.-(Ges. f³r Teerverwertung; Meiderich, Duisburg, Germany) Nov. 19, 1935, No. 32079. [Class 7 (iii)] Ignition is promoted in Diesel oil engines by so positioning a catalyst in the combustionchamber that exhaust gases from the working stroke remain in contact therewith during the compression stroke and allow light hydrocarbons of low ignition point to be formed. The catalyst is chosen from those adapted to effect the hydrogenation of oxides of carbon to form hydrocarbons of petroleum type, and is maintained at a temperature between 300 and 800‹ C. ; also, the catalyst is arranged so as to be out of direct contact with the injected fuel. As catalysts, the metals belonging chiefly to the sixth and eighth groups of the periodic system and their combinations and salts, e.g. chromium, nickel, molybdenum, and osmium, are preferred. In the Figure, the wall b of a pocket a in a cylinder head is covered by or consists of the catalyst, the temperature being maintained between the required limits by local shaping of the region in which the catalyst is placed.
