[Class 51 (ii)] In a suspended brick roof the hangers 5 are flexible and are looped or hooked at one end to engage the overhead support and looped at the other to embrace a metal or refractory bar 9 which fits into a dovetail recess 3 in the top of the roof brick 1. The bar and the recess into which it fits closely, are of circular cross-section, and the slot leading to the recess is just wide enough to admit the suspender. In the construction shown hoop iron is used for the suspenders, and the ends of the loops are secured by bale clips 7. The lower loop may be reinforced by a second iron strip. The bricks may be 6 x 3 inches on their exposed faces and 4 to 15 inches deep, and when the depth of the brick is 4 to 6 inches the suspender may be four times the depth. The overhead supports are so mounted that a line of bricks can readily be raised, and they are preferably tubular, and may be water or air cooled. A line of silica bricks assembled upon a support may be preheated to a temperature above the critical temperature of expansion and contraction before being fitted into the roof.
