Abstract
454,717. Generating combustion products under pressure. HARDENSETT, H., 42, D÷belestrasse, Constance, Germany. Dec. 6, 1935, No. 33903. Convention date, Dec. 6, 1934. [Class 51 (i)] [See also Group XXVII] A combustion-product engine has at least two independent combustion chambers 1, 2 supplied alternately with compressed oxygen-containing gases and fuel, the volume of each chamber being a multiple of the total working volume of the power cylinders 10 ... 12. Combustion or explosion is produced in each of the chambers 1, 2 in succession and the products of combustion are admitted to the power cylinders through pipes 6 ... 9 and inlet valves 13. The chambers 1, 2 are charged with compressed air or gas by a common compressor 5 through inlet valves 18 and the fuel may be supplied in gaseous, liquid or powdered form, or solid fuel may be burned on a grating. When the pressure in the chamber has fallen to a suitable final working pressure, any residues of combustion can be removed with the remaining combustion gases through a pipe 16 or 17. Gaseous or liquid fuel may be ignited in the chambers 1, 2 by sparking plugs 19 or by the heat of compression. Powdered fuel may be ignited by the heat of compression, with the aid of catalytic material arranged on rods or bars in the chamber; the fuel may be blown in by the passage of the compressed air through a nozzle having a perforated wall forming one side of a container for the fuel. A combustion chamber for fuel which is granular or in lumps is shown in Fig. 4. Compressed air is admitted through a nozzle 25 and deflected by a fuel container 26 over and through a grating 27 on which combustion takes place. The supply of fuel from the container to the grating is controlled by a rotary notched member 28 in accordance with the rate at which the fuel is consumed on the grating. Fuel residues are caught by baffles 30 in the passage leading to the power cylinders, or are removed by a refractory sieve by centrifugal action due to rotary movement of the gases of combustion, or by electrostatic precipitation. The waste gases from the power cylinders and the combustion chambers may be used to heat the compressed air or gas admitted to the combustion chambers, and the fuel may also be pre-heated.
