[Class 83 (iii)] A support or reel for the stock bars of an automatic lathe is spaced from and is rotatable coaxially with the work turret and is provided with rotary stock carriers arranged coaxial with each chuck to prevent wear of the stock in the support. The bed 1 carries standards 2, 3 connected by an upper frame 4. The work turret 5 comprises a spider 10 having end plates 11, 12 and intermediate partition 13 and is journalled in members 14..16, enclosed by the standard 2. The four work spindles 6 are formed as described in Specification 144,329, [Class 83 (iii)]. A central shaft 25 in the work turret carries a gear 26 engaging gears 27 on the spindles and is connected through a coaxial shaft 30 and other gearing to a power shaft. The work turret is indexed by a Geneva mechanism. The stock reel is mounted in standards 500 501, and its end cover 504 is secured to the work turret by a tube 510 so that the reel indexes with the turret. The stock tubes 525 are mounted in ball bearings. The work driving shaft 25 is coupled to shaft 528 carrying a gear 527 engaging gears 526 on the stock tubes so that the latter are driven in unison with the work-spindles.
