454,392. Control mechanism for cycles. MATLEY, A., Sherwood, Harboro' Road, Sale, Cheshire. May 20, 1935, No. 14652. [Class 136 (i)] Twist-grip mechanism for controlling a variable-speed gear on a pedal cycle through a flexible wire comprises notches or recesses on the inner end of the grip or on a plate secured thereto, and a gear-locating pin or projection adapted to co-operate therewith and carried by a sleeve or bracket fixed to the handle-bar beyond the inner end of the rotatable grip. The rotatable grip B is provided at its inner end with a bracket b<2> carrying a lug b<1> in which is mounted a stud b attached to a flexible cable A. The grip B is retained in various positions, according to the gear required, by means of a flange or plate b<3> on its inner end, provided with notches b4 adapted to engage a radial pin a<3> on a bracket' or clip a<2> on the handle-bar A<1>. The grip B is retained on the handle-bar A<1> by a cap A<3> on a plug A<4> inserted in the end of the handle-bar, an interposed spring a<4> being adapted to maintain the engagement of the notched flange b<3> with the pin a3. The wire A passes through a rubber &c. tube a<1> and a clip on the cycle frame near the top of the head, and thence, uncovered, along the upper frame tube to a bell-crank lever mounted on the frame beneath the saddle, the bell-crank lever being connected by another cable to the variable-speed gear in the rear hub.
