Abstract
454,005. Projectile fuzes. BIRKIGT, M., Rue du Capitaine Guynemer, Bois-Colombes, Seine, France. March 13, 1936. No. 7615. Convention date, Jan. 18. [Class 9 (i)] Relates to fuzes, especially intended for small-calibre pro. jectiles fired from rifled guns, and comprising a firing-pin locked by balls surrounded by a wall having apertures equal in number and size to the balls, means being pro. vided for preventing access of the balls to the aperture until the shot is fired. Accord. ing to the invention, an annular closed rotating path concentric with the axis of the projectile is formed for the balls to rotate in until they have acquired the rotation of the projectile and gathered sufficient centrifugal force to escape through their respective apertures. In the form shown, a firing-pin 7, provided with a head 11 behind a closing disc 10, is formed with a shoulder 12 supported by the balls 13 resting in a concave annular conical seat at the end of a fixed thimble 14. The apertures for the ball 13 might be in a fixed wall and closed by a partition of paper or thin sheet easily torn by inertia or centrifugal force ; but in the preferred form shown, the apertures 15 are formed in a split sleeve 17 held by friction in the forward position until the shot is fired, when the sleeve sets back, bringing the apertures opposite the balls. These then escape in due time through the apertures and ride up a conical wall 19 to an enlarged groove 18, leaving the firing-pin free to operate.
