[Class 94 (i)] A machine for enveloping bottles and the like in wood wool, straw, and other fibrous material, comprises a platform 7 adapted to be rotated by gearing 4, 5 from the main shaft 2. The bottle rests on a cushion 9 and is clamped in position by a cap 45. During the enveloping operation, the bottle is surrounded by a casing 11, made in two hinged parts 11a, 11b, Fig. 4, and adapted when brought together to be spaced somewhat from the bottle and to leave a slot through which the enveloping material may be fed. In use, the bottle is placed in position, and a pedal 32 is depressed to move a slide 23 to the left, Fig. 1. The sleeve is connected by links to square shafts 19, which through links 17, 18 close the halves of the casing. Further movement of the sleeve 23 causes it to abut a sleeve 25 on the spindle 24 and to move an arm 35 to clutch the driving pulley 3 to the shaft 2. The bottle is thus rotated and the enveloping material fed through the slot. One of the shafts 19 carries a plate 37 formed with a cam slot 37 engaged by a pin 39 on a lever 40. When the shaft 19 is rotated the lever 40 lifts a pawl 42 from a ratchet wheel 43 mounted coaxially with a pinion engaging a rack 44 which carries the cap 45, and allows the cap to fall to lock the bottle in position.
