Convention date, Feb. 18, 1935. [Class 29] A liquid to be concentrated by freezing out water is maintained in turbulent motion in contact with a cooling surface and the inter-surface between the liquid and atmosphere is remote from the seat of turbulent motion so that it remains quiescent and does not absorb gas while the gas content of the liquid under treatment is maintained within such limits that no gas is liberated owing to concentration. The liquid is degasified at stages of the concentration in order that this latter condition may be fulfilled. The apparatus comprises a chamber 1 provided with a cooling jacket 9 and fresh milk is admitted through valve 5 and partly concentrated milk through valve 8. A rotor 2 sets the liquid in turbulent motion and the upper surface of the liquid is maintained sufficiently high in the outlet tube 6 to cause it to be quiescent. The ice crystals and concentrated liquid leaving through pipe 6 are separated by centrifuging. If the liquid becomes viscous it may be discharged by a screw-conveyer.
