Abstract

429,474. Solidifying liquids by cooling. GES. FUR LINDE'S EISMASCHINEN AKT.- GES., H÷llriegelskreuth, near M³nich, and KRAUSE, G. A., 16, Widenmayerstrasse, Munich, Germany. Oct. 25, 1934, Nos. 30583 and 30584. Convention dates, Nov. 1, 1933 and April 9, 1934. [Class 29] A process for resolving a solution by freezing one or more of its constituents consists in cooling the solution in a mould until it is sufficiently frozen to be removed to a separator, e.g. a centrifuge, having the same form as the mould in which the liquid phase is separated from the solid phase. The mould is so cooled that the ice crystals formed in the solution lie in the direction in which the separating force acts. In the production of a milk concentrate, the milk may be frozen in an annular enamel mould 1 and removed by the member 2 to the basket of a centrifuge for the separation of the concentrate from the interstices between the ice crystals. The milk is frozen by immersing the moulds in a bath of cold brine which is circulated downwardly over the walls of the mould. The brine may be sprayed on to the walls of the moulds through pipes 18, 19, Fig. 5, and re-circulated by a pump 22. In order to prevent the formation of a crust of ice at the surfaces of the frozen milk, the mould may be provided with heatinsulating members such as 3, Fig. 1, and to prevent the formation of ice in the intersticed between the crystals during the washing or stripping operation, washing liquids having a freezing point below 0‹ C., are sprayed on to the frozen block which may, however, be finally washed with water. In a modification, the milk may be frozen in a disc mould and the frozen disc removed to a filter to the underside of which a suction pump is connected to withdraw the concentrate.
