[Class 72] [See also Group XII] To prevent one-sided or irregular descent of the charge in a blast furnace, blast with increased oxygen content is supplied through the tuyere or tuyeres at that part of the furnace in which the charge does not descend smoothly. As shown, each tuyere 13 is fitted with a pipe 15 for the supply, under control of a valve 12, of cold high-purity oxygen, the pipe 15 passing through the water jacket 14 of the tuyere to the inner wall thereof. In a modification, the pipe 15 is extended into the tuyere passage itself and delivers the oxygen along the axis thereof. Instead of discharging .directly into the tuyere 13, the pipe 15 may deliver into the blast pipe 17.
