Abstract

Fuel for use in internal-combustion engines is prepared by separating finely divided coal into portions poor and rich in ash and grinding the former in a liquid medium which produces a film thickness no greater than that of the engine lubricant until the maximum diameter of the ash grains is no greater than that thickness. The grinding liquid may be partially evaporated away after or during the grinding and the fuel used as a mixture which can be pumped. If a non-combustible grinding liquid is used, to obviate its complete evaporation a combustible liquid is desirably added after partial removal of the grinding liquid and the mixture stored in tanks. Stabilizers may be added to the powder-liquid mixtures. A grinding liquid more fluid than the engine lubricant is preferably used and may comprise gas oil, petroleum, alcohol, petrol or turpentine. A preliminary grinding of the coal in a disintegrator, hammer, or percussion mill is preferably effected, and the preliminary and fine-grinding mills may be arranged in tandem and driven by the engine. Specification 321,145, [Class 7 (ii)], is referred to.
