Abstract

A felt-like material is made by grinding waste vulcanized rubberized fabric, e.g. the carcases of old motor tyres, plasticizing the finely divided material so produced by solvents, heat, oxidation, &c., adding vulcanizing materials and if desired fillers such as wood flour or cork dust, sheeting in a calender, p rendering the surface of the material tacky by applying solvent or rubber cement or heating and applying fly or linters of cotton, silk, wool, &c. Fly of different colours and material may be applied in patterns by templates. The fly may be applied before or after vulcanizing or shaping to form shoes, hats, &c. The base sheet may be perforated and fly applied to conceal the perforations.
