Abstract

453,157. Protecting metal surfaces. COLES, S. O. COWPER-, Rossall House, Thames Street, Sunbury-on-Thames. March 7, 1935, No. 7107. [Class 93] [See also Group XVIII] Metal surfaces, such as iron and steel, are protected from corrosion by the sprayed application in the form of powder of a metallic coating electropositive to the material to be protected, the coating being applied to a previously applied priming-coat. If the priming-coat is penetrated by moisture, a galvanic couple is set up between the metallic layer and the iron or steel, which prevents corrosion. The metal powder may be zinc dust, or a mixture of zinc dust with powdered aluminium or magnesium or both. The priming-coat may be a red-lead paint. The metal powder may be mixed with a volatile liquid, such as petroleum or benzol. The metallic coating may be protected and ornamented by a further coating of any desired colour and appearance.
