[Class 78 (i)] [See also Group II] In filling limitec spaces such as com pression mould. with controllable quantities of granular or powdered material, the materia is first compacted by forcible rotation by means of blades in a closed, fixed container at a speed corresponding to the desired degree of density and then commmication is opened between the circumference of the container and the mould to charge the latter with a predetermined weight of the compressed material without stoppage of the apparatus. In the form shown the material is delivered from a hopper 5 to a centrifugal apparatus 1 in which it is first packed by the rotating blades 3 against the periphery of the casing and subsequently delivered by the blades when a tangential delivery-orifice 2 is opened. The density of packing is determined by the speed of rotation of the blades. In a modification the casing carrying the rotating blades is horizontal instead of vertical. In a further modification, an overflow pipe 8, Fig. 5, is fitted to accommodate excess material fed from the hopper over and above the quantity that can be compacted at any given time. The overflow material collecting in and overflowing from the vessel 7 forms a partial air-seal for the pipe and checks the rate of flow therein.
