[Also in Groups XVII and XXX] A weighinga pparatus for filling bags 25 with powder or granular material includes a hopper discharge unit 11 for charging a conditioning chamber 12, at atmospheric pressure, with a measured volume of material, whereafter the inflow to the chamber 12 ceases and a valve 29 opens to permit the material to pass from the chamber 12 to the bag 25, until the weight of the bag and its contents is sufficient to tip a scale mechanism 21 and cause the valve 29 to close. Cycle of operation.-With the chamber 12 filled to the desired level and the inflow thereto closed by a valve 42, a start button is pressed. This causes an air vent 55 to close and the valve 29 to open. The material in the chamber 12, fluidized by pressurized air from a diffusion pad 27, flows through a spout 24 into the bag. Since the conditioning chamber 12 is temporarily sealed, the air pressure therein will build up to create an artificial head which compensates for the decrease in actual head as the material level drops. An auxiliary air supply 75 can be used to bring the pressure up rapidly to increase the total head in the chamber 12. Upon the tipping of the scale mechanism 21, a flexible pipe leading to the spout 24 is flattened by a pinch valve 29 to stop the bag-filling operation. The recharging of the chamber 12 is then automatically initiated. The chamber 12 is recharged by stopping the air supply to the pad 27, opening the air vent pipe 55, opening the valve 42, and then supplying pressurized air to a diffusing pad 16 below the hopper discharge unit 11. The contents of the hopper 11 then flow via a pipe 13 into the chamber 12, until the level of the contents therein contacts a rotating paddle wheel 51 to indicate that the desired level of material has been reached. The apparatus is then ready for the next bag filling operation.
