Abstract

Sparking-plug insulator surfaces are provided with zones of metallic copper, formed in situ by reducing copper oxide. A liquid coating composition is applied having a fusible ingredient, preferably glaze-forming, and also a quantity of copper oxide in excess of that which will dissolve in the fusible ingredient on heating. Reduction is effected by applying a paste of an alkali and a comminuted metal which is electro-positive to copper, such as zinc or aluminium. An absorbent pad containing the paste may be pressed against the insulator which is mounted in a rotating holder.
