Abstract
452,524. Recuperators. CONWAY, M. J., 99, S. 11th Avenue, Coatesville, Pennsylvania, U.S.A. April 12, 1935, No. 11398. [Class 64 (i)] [See also Group XII] In an open-hearth furnace having three recuperators in series the heatexchange elements of the first recuperator consist of square - ended spool - like blocks 22, Fig. 7, built to form vertical walls extending between upper and lower partitions 23, 20. The waste gases flow horizontally through the tubular portions 22b of the blocks, while the air to be heated passes from the lower chamber 80 to the upper one 70 around the portions 22b. The blocks are made of mullite or chrome. In the second recuperator 18, Fig. 4, there are up and down passages 35, 36 for the waste gases, and crossing these are air heating tubes 44, 44a preferably of carborundum, extending between end headers 37, 38 and an intermediate chamber 40a. In the third recuperator 19 the air passes downwards through baffled metal casings 45, while the waste gases flow upwards between the casings.
