Abstract
The process of the parent Specification for rendering textile materials resistant to creasing is modified by impregnating the textile materials with a salt of an amine containing a straight or branched carbon chain with more than 5 carbon atoms, and an aldehyde substance or substance yielding an aldehyde, excluding formaldehyde itself, and heating the impregnated material to an elevated temperature. The amine salt may be a chloride, sulphate, or oxalate. The carbon chain of the amine may be interrupted by other atoms or groups such as oxygen, sulphur, or imino groups. The amines may also contain cyclic or heterocyclic radicles. Soluble salts may be used. In examples, hydrochlorides, sulphates, formates, acetates, lactates, or oxalates of octylamine, dodecylamine, stearylamine, amines from commercial stearic acid, amines from coconut fatty acids, amines from palm kernel oil fatty acids, amines from train oil fatty acids, amines from montanic acids, octylfurfurylamine, glucamine, and phenylstearylamine are used. The amines may be obtained from the fatty acids by first forming the nitriles and then reducing. The presence of larger amounts of acids than necessary for formation of the amine salts is avoided. Acetaldehyde, glyoxal, dimethylol urea, dimethylol formamide, or dimethylol acetone may be used. The aldehyde may be used in aqueous solution or in the gaseous state. The impregnated textile materials are subsequently treated at temperatures above 100 DEG C. and preferably between 100 and 200 DEG C. The treated fibres or fabrics are stable to creasing and of soft touch. In an example, viscose fabric is impregnated with a solution of stearylamine sulphate and glyoxal in water, and is then heated to 100 DEG C. In another example, viscose artificial silk fabric is impregnated with a warm solution of dimethylol urea and hydrochlorides of amines from coconut fatty acids, and then heated at 115 DEG C. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 describes also the use of formaldehyde itself as the aldehyde substance. In an example, viscose fabric is impregnated with a solution of hydrochlorides of amines from coconut fatty acids, treated with formaldehyde vapours, and then subjected to heating. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
