451,948. Making shoes with outturned uppers. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO., Ltd., Union Works, Belgrave Road, Leicester.-(United Shoe Machinery Co. ; 5, Calle de Fortuny, Barcelona, Spain) Feb. 13, 1935, No. 4589. [Class 17 (ii)] In making stitchdown shoes or r veldtschoen the outwardly directed marginal flange of the lasted upper is secured at the toe portion only to a sole member to which, and to the remaining portion of the flange, an outer sole is then secured. The sole member may, as shown at 12, have a shape similar to the toe portion only of a sole and substantially crescent shaped with the rear edge 13 skived. The toe portion 15 of the upper is secured in a relatively few places, e.g. by staples 14 and, before the outer sole is attached, the sides of the upper in the waist are smoothed or forced without being secured to the outer sole into the angle between the sides of the last and the margin of the outer sole. The flange on the upper may extend completely round the shoe and be secured at the heel portion to the outer sole before the outer sole is permanently secured to the shoe.
