Abstract
624,064. Making stitch-down shoes. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO., Ltd. (United Shoe Machinery Corporation). June 7, 1947, No. 15075. [Classes 17 (i) and 17 (ii)] An insole 22 is of such outline that when attached to a last 20 forward of the toe line its edge 24 is progressively inset from the last edge 26 while heelwardly thereof the insole and the last edge correspond. A notch 32 at the toe is engaged by a corresponding shaped portion 34, 36 of a reversible plate 30 to position the shoe in the lasting machine as in Specification 585,078. At the toe end, the upper 40, box toe 42, in flaccid condition and the lining 44 are first pulled over and wiped in until they abut the inset edge of the insole 22, in which position they are held temporarily by a wire until the box toe stiffens. The box toe and lining are then trimmed level with the top face of the insole and the upper is turned outwards and stitched at 52 in the angle of the crease to a midsole 50, the margins being cemented together. The upper is roughened on its outer surface for cement attachment to a welt 54. Heelwardly of the toe line, the upper and the lining are wiped in over the insole, the lining being attached thereto by sticking, and the upper is turned outwards and secured to the midsole 50, to which a sole 56 is cemented. The sole is then rough rounded, the width of the outturned margin around the sole being varied as desired. The welt 54, upper 48, midsole 50 and outsole 56 are then stitched together at 58.
