Abstract

624,068. Welted footwear. TOBACCO, F. J. June 9, 1947, No. 15157. [Class 17 (ii)] A welt 24 is of triangular cross section with a longitudinal channel 25 in one sloping side. An upper 20, lining 21 if used, and a sock lining 22 are stitched together at 23 at their edges and are then secured to the welt, as by stitching 28, with the edges in a channel 25. A last is then inserted, an insole 29 and/or shank piece 30, placed under the sock lining, and the welt turned under the sock lining, as shown. An outsole 34, prepared by skiving a triangular section from its edge, is placed with its bevelled edges 36 against the welt and is secured by sticking or stitching to the thick edge 26 of the welt, as at 37. The triangular section skived from the sole may be used as the welt strip. At the toe and/or heel the upper lining may be left free so that a box toe and/or heel counter can be inserted between the upper and lining. The lining is coated with cement at the free edge on the underside and when the last is inserted it adheres snugly to the sock lining holding the stiffener in position. The welt can extend around the whole shoe or only part thereof.
