[Class 37] A variable self inductance com prises a coil d on an inner core mem ber c<1> terminating at one end in a flange c which may or may not be con tinued as a return magnetic path c<2>, the other end of the core c<1> having an annular core part e with an airgap around it and the part c<1>, the mean length of the magnetic flux path in iron being varied by relative longitudinal movement between the parts. The part c<1>, Fig. 8, may have the shape shown so that the mean length variation is accompanied by a variation in magnetic cross-section.
