[Class 4] Each wing of an aeroplane is provided with a flap or flaps 3 mounted on the upper and/or under wing-surface and each hinged on a longitudinal axis, the flap or flaps on one wing being symmetrically arranged relatively to the flap or flaps on the opposite wing so that when the flaps are brought simultaneously to the operative position perpendicular to the wing surfaces thev canalize the air between themselves or between the sides of the fuselage and themselves to increase the supporting power of the aeroplane. As shown, the flaps 3, which normally are flush with the wings 1, co-operate with flaps or ailerons &c. 5 hinged on axes at right-angles to the axes of the flaps 3, the flaps 3, 5 being operated by the same or different mechanism. In a modification, a single flap 5 extends between the flaps 3.
