Abstract
<PICT:0451354/III/1> A radio - active, carbonated, liquid and a radio - active gas suitable for subsequent use in producing aerated beverages are produced by forcing carbon - dioxide under high pressure into a closed cylinder containing water or brine and superposed layers of gravel, granulated coke, and a radio-active material such as monazite sand or uranium ore. As shown, the cylinder A with the stated layers of materials C, B, D, is partly filled with water by the inlet H, and carbon-dioxide from the cylinder L is forced in until the air present in the cylinder A has been expelled and a pressure up to 50 lbs. per sq. inch is established. This condition is maintained for about three weeks, additional gas being added from time to time to replace that absorbed by the water. At the end of this period, the cock F is opened and the radio-active gas is expelled into a gasometer N, and can be used for making mineral waters. The radio-active water or brine may be drawn off by a cock K and stored in wooden casks for drinking or therapeutical purposes. Electrodes O may be provided for ionizing or sterilizing the water in the cylinder.
