Abstract
451,087. Chrome tanning. I. G. FARBENINDUSTRIE AKT.-GES., Frankfort-on- Main, Germany. Jan. 17, 1936, Nos. 1591 and 1592. Convention dates, Jan. 19, 1935, and Dec. 13, 1935. [Class 76] Chrome tanning is effected by the use of chromium salts of non-tanning polybasic aromatic carboxylic or sulphonic acids, e.g. phthalic acids or naphthalene disulphonic acids and their substitution products. The salts may be obtained for example by the reaction of the alkali salts of these acids with neutral or basic chromium sulphate, or the hides may be treated first with one and then with the other component required to form the salt. The treatment with the salts may be applied to leather already tanned with vegetable or synthetic tanning agents or conversely. Examples describe the use of chromium salts of phthalic acid, 1-nitronaphthalene-3À8-disulphonic acid, tetrachlorphthalic acid.
