Abstract
450,586. Universal joints; swash-plate mechanisms. ROBIN, L., 25A, Avenue Buyl, Ixelles, Brussels, and ROGGEN, M. VAN, 1, Rue du Centre, Sprimont, Belgium. June 6, 1935, No. 16506. Convention date, June 6,1934. [Classes 80 (ii) and 80 (iii)] A constant-velocity universal joint for intersecting shafts A and B, Fig. 1, comprises a pair of ball-and-socket joints, the parts 11, 13 of each of which are carried by a pair of forked arms 12, 14 of equal length pivoted on the two shafts about axes which intersect the axes of the shafts at right-angles. A central ball-and-socket joint 15, 16 may be arranged between the shaft ends at their point of intersection. The two arms associated with each shaft may be pivoted about the same axis, as shown in Fig. 1. Where, however, one of the shafts has a nutating movement, the two arms associated with each shaft are pivoted about axes disposed on opposite sides of the point of intersection of the shafts, as shown diagrammatically in Fig. 6, so as to preserve balance. Thus, in the case of a swashplate mechanism in which pistons 28, Fig. 8, slidable in a rotating cylinder block 26, act upon a plate 27 mounted loosely on an inclined portion 29 of a shaft D, a universal joint between the block 26 and the plate 27, which act as the shafts A and B respectively, comprises ball-and-socket joints 18 and 19, the parts of which are carried by forked arms 201, 202 and 23<1>, 23<2> pivoted about pins 21, 22 and 24, 25 respectively, the pins 21, 24 being carried through supports 30 by the block 26 while the pins 22, 25 are carried by the disc 27. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also the following : (1) the arms 12, 14 may be pivoted about axes which do not intersect the shaft axes but which are located at equal distances therefrom, as shown in Fig. 12 (Cancelled), whereby four or more ball-and-socket joints can be provided; (2) the shafts may be connected by ball-and-socket joints 1, 2, Fig. 7 (Cancelled), the parts of each of which are slidably carried on rods 5, 8 secured to plates 7, 10 fixed to the shafts, the rods being parallel to the shaft axes, or inclined thereto, or curved. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
