Abstract

483,235. Calculating - machines. THOMAS, A. Oct. 10, 1936, No. 27575. [Class 106 (i)] Mechanism for engaging and disengaging accumulator wheels 1 with their actuators 5 in a calculating-machine is characterized in that the wheels are meshed and unmeshed by rotating, through 180‹, a crank 9, 10 on a shaft 11 carrying a second crank 13 actuated by a lever 15 which is pivoted to the second crank and which at the beginning and end of each movement lies in a straight line with the second crank, said lever 15 being moved longitudinally to rotate the second crank while means (slot 19) is provided to tilt the lever 15 at the start and finish of each movement, to eliminate the dead centre effect. The invention is described as applied to a record-cardcontrolled statistical machine. The engagement and disengagement of the wheels 1 with their setting sectors 5 is controlled by a plate 43 pivoted at 44 to the frame and at 16 to the lever 15. This lever has a pin 18 moving in the slot 19 of a fixed plate 20 and has a pin-and-slot connection 14 with the second crank arm 13 on shaft 11. Secured to this shaft is a cylindrical member 10 having a crank-pin 9 to which is pivoted an extension 8 of the frame 7, 6 pivoted on the shaft 2 of the wheels 1. Shaft 2 is also carried between two arms 3 pivoted at 4. The plate 43 is rocked by a link 47, Fig. 3 (not shown), as in Specification 483,234. If plate 43 is rocked clockwise about its pivot 44, the lever 15 moves longitudinally towards the crank arm 13 and its pin 18 moves down the slot 19 so that the crank disc 10 and its pin 9 are rotated 180‹ to withdraw the accumulator wheels 1 from the setting sectors 5.
