Abstract

596,945. Universal joints. SOC. DE CONSTRUCTIONS MECANIQUES CHENARD & WALCKER. Aug. 7, 1945, No. 20180. Convention date, Feb. 6, 1941. [Class 80(ii)] In a double universal joint of the kind wherein spherical heads 4, 5 on each shaft carry pairs of spherical trunnions 10 on integral radial pins 6, the trunnions and heads sliding in three axial cylindrical grooves in a common intermediate sleeve 1 and the shafts being centred by a non- driving ball-and-socket 18, 16, the shank 19 of one member, e.g. of the ball 18, slides axially in its shaft against a return-spring 23. This permits relative axial movement between the coupled shafts without undue departure from unit velocity-ratio. In the plane shown in Fig. 1, the socket 16 extends over more than 180 degrees so as to retain the ball 18 against axial tension, the ball being flat-sided in that plane. In the Fig. 2 plane at right-angles to Fig. 1, the mouth of the socket is cut away as at 27 to admit the ball which is then turned through 90 degrees to the position shown, both ball and socket being then locked against relative rotation by pins 5a, 4a. The shaft ballhead 5 is located axially in the intermediate sleeve 1 by a concave-faced screw 25 in the latter. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also an arrangement (Figs. 4 and 5 Cancelled, not shown), in which the three cylindrical guide-grooves in the intermediate sleeve 1 are formed in a pair of separate opposed members attached by welding or screws to the inside of the sleeve. The ball and socket members are rigid with their shafts, spring-loaded axial freedom being allowed at the end of the driven shaft. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
