Abstract

222,563. Warhus, O. F. July 2, 1923. Universal joints of the ball-and-socket type. The drive is transmitted to the socket from a circumferential groove 4 in the ball 3 by a partial ring 8 terminating in hollow trunnions 9, through which and a clearnce slot 5 in the ball passes a pin 11, serving to relieve the member 8 of strain. In order to keep the part 8 seated in its groove after wear has occurred, the pin 11 may pass also through a cylindrical piece 12, Fig. 2, received in a boring of the ball 3. In both forms, the trunnions bear in bushes 10 preferably of rectangular shape externally and held in recesses between the parts 6, 7 of the divided socket, between which parts are arranged also packing- washers removable to compensate for wear. The member 8 may extend over the mouths of the slot 5 to retain grease &c., or a dust cover 13. Fig. 2, carried by or formed with the bearing of the shaft 1 may be provided with a ring 14 and leather or other washer bearing on the socket 6.
