Abstract

1,001,316. Universal joints. B.R.D. CO. Ltd. May 29, 1964 [June 13, 1963], No. 23534/63. Heading F2U. A double Hooke's joint comprises yokes 14, 16 on driving and driven shafts 10, 12 and having trunnions 18, 20 pivotally mounted in rectangular rings 22, 24 which are provided with trunnions 28, 30 pivotally mounted in a common member 26 forming a shroud partially enclosing the joint. The arms of the yoke 16 are cranked and of greater radial dimensions than the arms of the yoke 14 to permit a high angular divergence between the shafts with a compact joint. Centring of the shafts is assisted by a socket 48 on the shaft 10 receiving a ball 50 on the shaft 12, a gaiter 52 retaining lubricant which is supplied to the socket through a bore (not shown) in the shaft 10 and by a spring- loaded wick in the bore bearing against the ball. The joint cover is completed by a cover member 54 secured to the member 26 and by a cover member 56 secured to the driven shaft.
