Abstract

449,951. Fluid - pressure brakes. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London. Jan. 3, 1935, No. 254. Convention date, Jan. 3, 1934. [Class 103 (i)] In a disc or cone brake particularly for lifting mechanism and actuated by a fluid pump 3 operated by an electric motor 1, the pump is mounted on the brake casing and acts upon one or more diaphragms 5 or elastic members which cause axial displacement of one or more brake discs or cones 10. As shown, the motor 1, which is switched on with the main hoisting &c. motor 12, operates the pump to force liquid against the diaphragm 5 which moves against the action of a spring 6 to release the cone 10. Valves may be provided to throttle the flow of liquid in both directions. In a modification in which the brake casing is mounted directly on the motor, two diaphragms are provided for operating oppositely-moving brake cones. To cool the brake, fan blades may be provided on the rotating member 4 and openings formed therein to permit the passage of a ventilating current, as indicated by the arrows.
