Abstract
419,969. Speed governors. SMITH, D. M., 37, Church Street, Stretford, Manchester, and ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London. July 18, 1933, No. 20290. [Class 57.] An inertia governor is employed to control the movement of a body or system capable of movement in both directions and is associated with a mechanism which discriminates between acceleration and deceleration so that the inertia governor is rendered inoperative during one of these changes when that particular change occurs in either direction of movement. Fig. 1 shows an inertia governor 34 as described in Specification 393,598 employed in a winding &c. gear as described in Specification 392,252, [Group XXXIV]. The brakes 2 of the gear are actuated by a weight 9 and a piston 12 subjected to pressure controlled by a valve 15 and a valve sleeve 35. The valve 15 is moved by a lever 86 or by the action of fluid pressure on the piston 16. The sleeve 35 is connected by linkage to the brake operating links to provide a follow-up movement. The inertia governor 34 is connected to a control valve 47 co-operating with a sleeve 71 which derives a follow-up movement from the brake operating linkage and also from a depth indicator. The discriminator 92 comprises a flywheel 97 driven by gearing 94 and resiliently mounted upon the shaft 93 by springs 100, 100<1>. A sleeve 111 secured to the flywheel is provided with ports 110. A member 101 is mounted upon a splined portion of the shaft so that it may move circumferentially a certain fixed amount and ports 112 are provided in an extension. A ring 102 is provided with pins 106 engaging the member 101 and also springs 103 so that it is pressed into engagement with the stationary ring 104. It is arranged that the ports 110 assume a central position but that the ports 112 assume one of two extreme positions according as to which direction the shaft 93 is rotated and due to the effect of the braking disc 102 and the play in the splines, so that the ports will align only upon one of the following, acceleration or deceleration, taking place in either direction of rotation. Mounted in a casing 105 is a valve 96 subjected on its face 123 to a fluid pressure and its larger face 121 is subjected to the same fluid pressure after passing through a restricted bore. The space 122 is connected through the bore 113 in the shaft 93 to an annular space leading to the ports 112. When the ports 110,112 do not align, the valve 96 will be retained in its lefthand position wherein the pipe 95 will be connected to exhaust and the connection between the inertia governor 34 and the piston 16 will be broken. However when the ports 110, 112 align, the space 122 is connected to atmosphere and the valve 96 moves to the right-hand position and the pipe 28 from the control valve 47 is connected to the pipe 95. Specification 298,691, [Class 57], also is referred to.
