Abstract
449,426. Mercury switches. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., Magnet House, Kingsway, London, and COX, W. R., and GIBSON, J. W., c/o General Electric Co., Ltd., Witton, Birmingham. May 2, 1935, No. 13100. [Class 38 (v)] A mercury switch comprises three vertical limbs 1, 2, 3 joined by horizontal limbs 4, 5, the limb 4 being formed with a construction 8. In the normal position shown, mercury connects contacts 6, 9 and if the switch is rocked fairly rapidly contact is made and broken at contact 6 due to movement of mercury in limbs 2 and 3. If the normal position is one in which the limbs are not vertical, mercury flows to or from limb 1 through constriction 8 and the level of the mercury relative to the contact 6 is unchanged and the operation of the switch due to rapid rocking is unaffected. The switch is used in sea fishing for controlling a flashing light on a marking float, the switch being operated by the rocking of the float, and is not rendered inoperative if the float takes a permanent list.
