Abstract
590,627. Indicating liquid-levels. K. D. G. INSTRUMENTS, Ltd., and PURNELL, J. E. Feb. 7, 1945, No. 3150. [Class 123 (i)] [Also in Group XXXVII] Means for indicating the level of petrol &c. in a tank 10, comprises a pair of float-actuated mechanisms 11, 12 mounted one above the other on the side of the tank, or one on the top 16 and the other in the bottom 17 of said tank, and each including, for example, two different coloured lamps for indicating high and low level conditions respectively as determined by the associated float 13, 14, the movement of the latter being transmitted to the switch 61 of the lamps by an intermediate magnet or magnets 53 and an armature or magnet 26. Preferably there are provided two magnets 53 which are secured to brass block 52 pivotally mounted between bracket arms 50 depending from a disc 48 of insulating material, the disc 48 mounting a common terminal 67 and two other terminals 68, 69, one in each lamp circuit, and being housed, together with the magnets 53, in one compartment 24 of a hollow plug 20, a second compartment 29, separated from the first by a transverse partition 23, housing the armature 26 which is pivoted at 27. The switch or contact plate 61 is also located within the compartment 29 between the insulating disc 48 and a spring- pressed roller 60 in the block 52, being pivotally mounted between the bracket arms 50, and it carries two contacts 63, 64 with a connecting strip 65, the strip 65 being connected to the terminal 67 and the contacts 63, 64 being adapted to mate with one or other of the terminals 68, 69. The arrangement is such that movement of the float 13 or 14 from one extreme position to the other will rock the armature 26 and this movement will be communicated through the magnets 53, brass block 52 and roller 60 to the switch 61 which will close one of the two circuits 67, 68 or 67, 69. When the mechanisms are mounted horizontally on the side of the tank the floats are fixed directly on the outer ends of the armatures, but, if disposed vertically, the floats are each carried by a lever 34 which is pivoted within a fork 32 projecting upwardly or downwardly from an extension tube 18 fitted to the plug 20, oscillatory movements of the lever 34 transmitted to the armature 26 by a pair of rods 43, 44 the ends of which engage recesses 41, 42 and 45, 46 in the lever and armature respectively.
