[Class 53] A combined zinc and carbon electrode for dry batteries comprises a zinc element coated with a colloidal dispersion of carbon in an ammonia-resisting adhesive carrier or varnish. The carbon may consist of graphite or acetylene soot and the carrier may comprise gums, natural or artificial resins, varnish or other fluid, the colloidal suspension being obtained by grinding the ingredients in a colloid mill. One or more coats of the suspension may be applied to the zinc plate by brushing or spraying. Graphite particles may be sprinkled on the carbon surface. The surface of the zinc plate that is to receive the carbon layer may be prepared by a degreasing process or by sandblasting or by being coated with a dispersion of carbon and methylated spirit containing lac.
