447,848. Making stoppers for bottles &c. ARMSTRONG CORK CO., Lancaster, Pennsylvania, U.S.A.-(Assignees of McCombs, A. R.) Feb. 6, 1935, No. 3837. Convention date, June 30, 1934. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] [See also Group XVII] Jointing by stamping.-A double - shell metallic closure such as used in sealing bottles and jars is formed by telescoping a cap into a shell 2 and forcing a downwardly and outwardly extending flange 9 so that the cut edge thereof bites into the interior of the shell. The flange 9 initially is at an angle of greater than 90‹ to the cap and is forced to an angle of substantially 90‹. The shell is deformed, as by turning the edge 15, to maintain and, if desired, to assist the engagement of the flange 9, which, as shown in Fig. 4, may be provided with teeth 17 about four times the width of the intervening spaces.
