447,080. Electricity supply; motors. SMITH & SONS (MOTOR ACCESSORIES), Ltd., S. BAXTER, F., and WORSTER, N., Edgware Road, Cricklewood, London. Dec. 11, 1934, No. 35543. Addition to 395,695, [Group XVIII]. [Classes 35 and 38 (iv)] Substituting sources in series.-In the arrangement described in the parent Specification for supplying a clock motor with intermittent direct current of suitable frequency on failure of the ordinary alternating current supply means are provided for simulating the effect of alternating current more closelv than does an intermittent current. For this purpose the motor, besides the alternating- current winding, is provided with two windings one of which carries the intermittent current and the other a direct current opposed to the intermittent current, the two fields being so proportioned that the resulting field resembles that due to the alternating current. The Figure shows a circuit for producing this effect. Alternating current is supplied by a transformer g to the motor winding d and through a rectifier m to an electromagnet l. A battery u supplies current directly to a motor winding c and, through a vibrating contact r, the period of which is controlled by a spring to be equal to that of the alternating current, to a motor winding c. The windings band c are normally cut off by a switch controlled by the electromagnet 1, but on failure of the alternating current the switch closes and puts the windings band c in circuit. The windings b, c and d may act on the same motor or the windings band c may act on one rotor and the winding d on a second rotor on the same shaft, or two separate motors geared together may be employed.
