Abstract

Textiles, particularly animal and artificial fibres, are washed by means of aqueous solutions which contain in addition to an alkali pyrophosphate, water soluble salts of nuclear alkylized aryl sulphonic acids not containing amino groups. The preferred alkali pyrophosphate is sodium pyrophosphate. Other known washing, cleansing and bleaching agents may be added. The required aqueous solutions are preferably made by mixing the solid components together in the desired proportion and dissolving the mixture in water. In place of neutral pyrophosphate, acid alkali pyrophosphates may be used. The preferred salts of the nuclear alkylized aryl sulphonic acids are the alkali and ammonium salts. Substituents which may be present in the aryl nucleus include hydroxyl, ether, ester and halogen groups. In examples: (1) sodium isopropyl-naphthalene sulphonate, sodium sulphate, neutral sodium pyrophosphate, and a small amount of sodium perborate are mixed, dissolved in water, and used specially for washing wool; (2) sodium dibutyl-naphthalene sulphonate, neutral sodium pyrophosphate and sodium bicarbonate forms a mixture which may be employed in 0,5--1 per cent concentration for washing wool and artificial silk. Borax may replace the sodium bicarbonate if desired. A table is given showing the influence of varying amounts of sodium pyrophosphate on the lathering power of isopropyl-naphthalene sulphonic acid.
