Abstract

445,575. Thermionic cathodes. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., Magnet House, Kingsway, London, and FRANCIS, V. J., c/o General Electric Co., Ltd., Wembley, Middlesex. Oct. 12, 1934, No. 29254. [Class 39 (i)] A thermionic cathode, more particularly for a high-pressure metal-vapour lamp, comprises a plurality of grid-like members which form layers, within the innermost of which lies a body of one more compounds of an alkaline earth metal or metals, and are not in contact with the inner wall of the device or with a member sealed thereto. A tungsten spiral 2 embraces a cylindrical body 1, which is formed of an alkaline earth compound as described in Specifications 384,067 and 411,266, and is surrounded by a tungsten spiral 3. One end of each of the spirals is welded to the support 4 and the other end of the spiral 3 is welded to the support 4<1>. In another form the spiral 3 fits closely over and supports the spiral 2 and its ends are welded to the supports. For degassing, one of the spirals is directly-heated and may have a comparatively low resistance or does not contact with an adjacent spiral throughout its length.
