[Class 51 (ii)] [See also Group V] The chemical and physical properties of blast furnace slag are influenced by blowing silica, e.g. fine dried sand, into the hearth casing of the blast furnace below the plane passing through the twyers. As shown, sand is blown in through a nozzle 2 situated below the plane I-I passing through the twyers 4. Slag is run out through a tap hole 5.
