Abstract

<PICT:0443888/IV/1> <PICT:0443888/IV/2> <PICT:0443888/IV/3> The Specification describes a process of mercerization of cellulose fibres in which the fibres are held clamped through their length during subjection to the mercerizing and washing baths. Apparatus suitable for the purpose comprises a roller or a series of rollers over or between which the material is passed while held between conveyer bands of pervious material, or such bands may be held while passing through the liquid by pressure chains and clamping devices. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, material is transported between pervious bands b held together by chains c, and is sprayed from nozzles d mounted above suction boxes e. The links of the chains are engaged by the jaws of clamps f. In the modification shown in Fig. 6, the bands b are held against a drum h by means of a chain c.
