Abstract

Textile fibres of raw vegetables are degummed by treating with a solution containing caustic soda and casein, under pressure and heat, then washing and drying. The degumming is effected in an autoclave in which the fibrous material is covered with 10 times its weight of water containing 5--15 per cent casein and 1--5 per cent caustic soda, the autoclave closed and steam heated at 2--6 atmospheres for about 40 mins., after which the fibres are washed and dried. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also the degumming of vegetable fibres by using in acid or alkaline solution:--protein such as albumen, glues or gelatines; organic sulpho-acids such as free or combined ricinoleic acid; sodium or potassium oleate, stearate or palmitate and soaps having an organic base; gums, resins and starches. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
