Abstract
In the creaming of latex, the operation is interrupted when the rate of creaming begins to decrease rapidly, the serum is separated and replaced by water or latex, creaming agent is added to replace that removed with the serum, and the operation is continued. The "break" in the rate occurs: (a) When the rubber-rich portion contains 45-55 per cent total solids, (b) in one-fifth to one quarter of the normal time for creaming to 60 per cent total solids, (c) when the volume of serum is 30-45 per cent of the latex, (d) when the rate of serum separation falls to a predetermined amount. This last depends on the nature of the latex. With fresh, untreated latex, this is about 0,5-1,0 per cent per hour; with old latex or fresh latex to which soap has been added, 2-3 per cent; latex which has been agitated as described in Specification 417,162, or subjected to an electrical potential as described in Specification 344,647, 4-6 per cent of the total latex. This operation may be repeated as many times as desired, the final operation only being allowed to continue until a 60 per cent cream is obtained. Specification 413,185 also is referred to.
