Abstract

442,679. Automatic control of electromotive force, current, &c. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., Magnet House, Kingsway, London, and GIBSON, J. W., c /o General Electric Co., Ltd., Witton, Birmingham. Aug. 17, 1934, No. 23754. [Class 38 (iv)] Over regulation and hunting is minimized in an automatic regulator of any quantity, for example, voltage, by causing raise and lower contacts to co-operate with a contact or contacts which is or are displaced against a biassing force through the contact pressure, and retarding the return of the co-operating contacts to normal positions by damping means. The raise and lower contacts may for example control a resistance in the field circuit of a generator in the manner shown in Fig. 3 of Specification 322,510, [Class 38 (iv)]. The invention is described with reference to the control of the voltage of an alternator 17 and an induction disc relay responsive to its terminal volts and compounded by a current transformer 25 operates a single contact 1 mounted by a spring 4 on the spindle of the relay. Raise and lower contacts 2, 3 are carried by a separate spindle 6 and biassed to a normal mean position by a spring 13. When contact is made by the contact 1 the contacts 2, 3 are displaced but their return is checked by the damping magnet 32 operating on the spindle 6 in the manner shown, so that the engaged contacts become separated and contact may be made between the other pair if the regulating effect be too rapid. Other applications of the invention mentioned are the control of the voltage of a D.C. machine and of the current of A.C. and D.C. machines.
