[Class 132 (ii)] In a captive ball apparatus for practising golf, the ball is integral with a resilient stem capable of yielding in any direction but sufficiently rigid to support the ball. The apparatus comprises a base a which may form part of a case in which the apparatus may be carried. The cover b of the case serves as a platform on which the user stands, the base and the cover being adjustably connected by a removable tube n. On the base a is pivotally mounted an arm e of solid or tubular rubber terminating in a ball e<1>. The pivot d of the arm is adjustable to vary the height of the ball. A paper or other chart i is clipped to the base in front of the pivoted arm. When the user makes a stroke the ball marks the chart and the position of the mark affords an indication of the direction of travel of the ball, and in some cases by reason of the extension of the arm gives an approximate indication of the distance of the drive. An elastic band returns the arm. The ball may be marked with a cross or other device as shown in Fig. 5, so that the mark made by the cross on the chart affords an indication of the twist imparted to the ball and by inference an indication of pull or slice. The cross may be inked by an ink pad and the chart may be cleaned by a wiper k. To prevent damage to the club, the track h immediately behind the ball is made resilient, for example, by a sheet of sponge rubber covered by a plate of spring steel.
