Measuring the force of a blow.-Apparatus for indicating the strength and correctness of golf strokes comprises a plate resting upon or anchored to the floor or ground, a hand or pointer pivoted to the plate and adapted to move over a scale on the plate, a spring controlling the movement of the hand or pointer, a golf ball attached to one end of an inextensible cord the other end of the cord being connected to the hand or pointer so that as the ball is projected the angular motion of the hand or pointer indicates the strength of the stroke. As shown in Fig. 1, an elastic cord c is stretched between arms b, b<1> projecting from a base a, and a golf ball is tethered by an inextensible cord e<1> to a ring e<2> freely mounted on the elastic cord c. An inextensible cord e connects the ring to a pointer d, movable under frictional restraint, over a scale a<2>. In using the apparatus, the pointer is set to zero against a stop g<1> and the ring e<2> is set mid-way along the cord c, a scale being provided if desired to facilitate the setting. The player strikes the ball and thus extends the cord c, causing the pointer d to be displaced and give an indication of the length of the drive. The displacement or otherwise of the ring e<2> along the cord c affords an indication of the accuracy of the stroke. In a modification, Fig. 3, the ball is tethered to an arm d' pivoted on a pin d' and controlled by a spring c<2>. A pointer d engaging the arm d<3> by means of a projection d<5> is carried forward with the arm when the ball is struck, and remains in its forward position over the scale a<2> when the arm d' returns.
