Golf-practising appliances.- A device for practising golf comprises a member slidably mounted on a rod carried by a turnable support, the slidable member being connected to a ball by a cord or the like and constrained in its movements by a spring encircling the rod. A recording device operable by the slidable member indicates the distance the ball is hit. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2 the device comprises a base 11 provided with fixed end members 18, 19 and supported on a U- shaped member 12 pivotally mounted on a turntable 15. A block 21 is slidably mounted on a rod 20 carried by the end members 18, 19 and is connected by a cord 28 passing round pulleys 24, 26, 27 to a swivel 29 which is in turn connected by a, cord 32 to a ball 31. When the ball is struck, the block 21 compresses a spring 22 and causes a one-way indicator 38 to move over a scale 34 graduated to show the length of the drive. The character of the stroke, whether the ball has been topped, skied, sliced or pulled, is denoted by the position of the device after the stroke has been made. In a modification, Fig. 5, the base 11 is replaced by a tube and the indicator 38 is slidably mounted on a rod 11<a>. The spring 22 is formed in two parts abutting against a sleeve 21<c>, the left hand part being shorter and stronger than the right hand part and acting as a buffer. The movement of the block 21 may be damped by inserting a flat spring in a longitudinal groove in the rod 20 in such a manner that it bears against the spring 22, or dash-pot devices may be incorporated with the pulleys 26, 27. Balls. - The ball 31 may be formed with a tape 48, Fig. 15, of leather or other material inserted between the cover and the core and projecting to form a loop 49 for attachment to the cord 32.
